Proper Maintenance for Drum Sets
A drum set is a very expensive musical instrument. Utmost care should be given to drums sets to ensure longer lifespan and consistent tone quality. It only takes one slip of carelessness to destroy the entire drum set but will require a lifetime of consistent care and maintenance to ensure their usefulness for a long period of time. Any owner of drum sets should be aware on how to properly care for their musical instrument as this will aid in performance and will help in the improvement of musical skills.
Cleaning and Caring for Drums
Cleaning drums depend on how old your drums would be. The older your drums would get, the more you would need to clean them. Brand new drum sets may only have a few dusts so cleaning your drums sets with a piece of cloth or even duster will do the trick. But if you already own the drum sets for more than a year, you might want to take additional cleaning practices for proper drum care. When you already have a relatively old drum set, you might need to clean it with regular soap. The chrome could easily attract dirt so you need to be generous in applying soap solution on the chrome for your drums. If you think the heads are dirty, try to wipe them with a damp cloth but be careful in placing pressure and the amount of water. Anything excessive will be dangerous for your drums and its heads.
Cymbals and Pedals
Cymbals will require a different type of maintenance. As much as possible, purchase a metal polish that is specifically made for cymbals. You can get this type of polish in different music stores and they would be more than happy to recommend you the best brand to buy. If you don’t have the budget, the same soapy solution could work and will clean your cymbals in no time.
Pedals should also be cleaned thoroughly. You don’t need to have another expensive metal polish to keep the chrome look good. A regular metal polish will do wonders. An important thing to remember is to consistently lubricate your pedals so that it will work as expected and will not attract any rust.
Proper Storage
Your drum set should be placed in an area where there is room temperature and will stay that way. Any drastic change in temperature will be dangerous for your drums especially the heads which could crack if it experiences extreme temperature changes.
The best way to store your drums and cymbals is to purchase a drum case. If you have a drum case, you will be able to store your drums and even safely transport them in case you wanted to go on a road trip. Cymbals also have separate cases which will protect it from dents. But these cases are very expensive that unless you are planning to go on a tour, you don’t need to buy them. Any thick blanket that could protect your drum sets from dust, water, heat and extreme changes in temperature will do.
